In today’s interconnected world, companies in all industries need to publish APIs and cultivate a developer community to access and use them. To be competitive today, attracting and supporting developers is essential. The key to cultivating a vibrant developer community that uses your APIs and supports your platform is a good developer relations program. “Developer Programs and APIs in the News” is a series of news items from developer programs around the world.

NVIDIA – October 21 – Facial Recognition as a Service for Businesses. “Russia’s NTechLab, one of the world’s leading facial recognition companies, released a new product called FindFace.Pro that allows businesses to easily integrate their cloud-based REST API into existing products. NVIDIA products are used extensively in the technology. The team is using CUDA, GeForce GTX 1080 GPUs, TITAN X GPUs and cuDNN-accelerated deep learning frameworks to train their models and then leverage GPUs in the Amazon cloud for the inference (production) portion.”
Intel – October 20 – Intel Brings Tomorrow’s Payment Solutions to Market at Money 20/20. “Digitalized services and seamless payment experiences make it easier than ever to buy what you want, when you want it. But with this purchasing ease – and the benefits it offers consumers and merchants – comes new risks and threats. Intel is working with device makers and payment solution providers to integrate hardware-level security offerings to meet consumers’ growing expectations while creating best practices to reduce the risk to personal data.”
Apple – October 20 – Developer Insights Series: Marketing a Game at Launch. “WRKSHP shares how it built an audience in the lead-up to the worldwide launch of Battle Camp, and how it attracted hundreds of thousands of players with limited marketing resources.”
Evans Data – October 20 – Cloud Formations. “The number of developers actively developing in a Cloud environment reached 5.4 million in 2016, according to our most recent Global Development Population and Demographics Study, the de facto standard in developer population estimates. This represents an increase of 375% since 2009.”
Google – October 20 – Android Developer Stories: drupe and Noom expand globally by localising their apps on Google Play. “Interested in growing your app on a global scale? See how two app developers localized their apps in unique ways to drive revenue and user engagement.”
Intuit – October 19 – Updated .NET and Java SDKs for QuickBooks Online available now. “We’re happy to announce recent updates to some of our SDKs for QuickBooks Online.”
Roku – October 19 – Roku Publishing Platform – new features. “October was a massive month for Roku developers, introducing several new tools that simplify the experience of developing, publishing, debugging, and monitoring Roku channels.”
DevRelate – October 19 – Social Media Posts for your DevRel Program – when to post? – “Guy Kawasaki talks about the importance of reaching as many people as possible. Guy often posts links at several different times to reach audiences who read their social feeds at different times.”
Intel – October 19 – Intel Celebrates Women in Technology at 2016 Grace Hopper Conference. “Reversing the gender imbalance in the technology industry is a crucial component of Intel’s Diversity in Technology initiative, announced in January 2015. In February 2016, Intel announced 100 percent gender pay parity in its workforce which was maintained as of the 2016 mid-year report. The mid-year 2016 report, released in August, also revealed that an increase of female representation to 25.4 percent in the U.S. workforce.”
Mozilla – October 18 – An Interview With Giovanny Beltran, js13kgames Winner. “js13kgames, a JavaScript coding competition for HTML5 game developers, announced this year’s winners a few weeks ago. Today we have an interview with Giovanny Beltran, winner of many categories at js13kgames, and one of the best entries in this year’s contest. Giovanny has been programming for 13 years, and began working with JavasScript five years ago. In his free time he likes to play and create game demos.”
Garmin – October 18 – Connect IQ 2.1.5 now available. “Develop watch faces, data fields, widgets and apps for Garmin’s wearable devices.”
IBM – October 14 – Tech leaders join forces to form OpenCAPI Consortium. “Imagine the business challenges that would be solved with 10 times faster data center server performance. For those of you who design and develop technology for the data center, this has been a goal you’ve strived for and struggled to achieve due to the diminishing rate of microprocessor technology and design improvement. Until now!”
AT&T – October 12 – What You Need to Know About the 2017 AT&T Developer Summit. “The AT&T Developer Program is pleased to announce that registration is now open for the 2017 AT&T Developer Summit, January 3-4, 2017, at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada. The 2017 Developer Summit promises to deliver the networking events, exhibits, and content attendees have come to expect, plus some new surprises that highlight our leadership in providing entertainment to customers like no one else.”
Microsoft – October 11 – Cross-device experience with Project Rome. “Project Rome is a platform for creating experiences that transcend a single device so they can harmonize across devices – empowering a developer to create human-centric scenarios that move with the user and blur the lines between their devices regardless of form factor or platform. This vision is beginning to take shape in the Windows 10 Anniversary Update (Windows 10, Version 1607) with the Remote Systems API, enabling developers to extend their app experiences across Windows devices connected proximally or through the cloud.”
